Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone raises funds with their First Annual Boxing Event in Partnership with Technique ABC hosted at King Georges Hall

Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone, in collaboration with Technique ABC, proudly hosted their first annual fundraising boxing event at King George’s Hall on 17th May. The event, attended by over 450 enthusiastic supporters, aimed to raise funds for the Youth Zone’s ‘Next Level Sport’ initiative and showcase the remarkable talent of young people participating in the program.

The atmosphere at King George’s Hall was electric as attendees witnessed thrilling boxing matches featuring young athletes from the Youth Zone. Wayne Wild, Chairman of Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone, welcomed the attendees and explained the importance of Next Level Sport for young people. The event highlighted the skill, dedication, and potential of these boxers, providing them with a platform to shine and inspire the audience with their performances.

The ‘Next Level Sport’ initiative is a visionary program designed to enable young people to lead healthier, more prosperous lives through the power of sports and physical activity. By focusing on physical literacy, fun, and enjoyment, the program aims to engage around 4,000 young people annually. It strives to level the playing field, create pathways into positive activities, and address health inequalities affecting the most disadvantaged youth in the community.

Wayne Wild, Chairman of Blackurn & Darwen Youth Zone, said:

“Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone is committed to providing children and young people with opportunities for developmental, character-building experiences through sports and active pursuits. Operating seven days a week over both sites, the Youth Zone offers a free hot meal and over 20 activities nightly. With a membership of 5,767 young people, representing 14% of the eligible population, the facility is a bustling hub of activity, visited by over 1,200 young people weekly.”

The event also celebrated the successful partnership with Technique ABC, whose boxing gym at the Youth Zone is managed by dedicated volunteer Shaun Litherland. The gym, frequented by 200 young people weekly, has been a cornerstone of the Youth Zone’s sports offerings.

Shaun Literland, from Techqniue ABC, said:

“We are really proud of what we can achieve through the power of sports at Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone. Among its many success stories is Aaron, a young boxer who, through the support and motivation from Youth Zone staff and coaches, has risen from novice to national and international champion and recently earned a spot on Team GB.”

The boxing provision, a key feature of the Next Level Sports program, has garnered support from notable figures such as Gordon Taylor OBE, former PFA CEO and Blackburn Rovers player. The Youth Zone’s operations, which cost £2.6 million annually, rely heavily on fundraising efforts like this event to continue making a positive impact.

As the evening drew to a close, the sense of community spirit and support was palpable. Funds raised during the event will directly contribute to the Next Level Sports program, ensuring that Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone can continue to transform lives and provide vital opportunities for the young people of the area.
