Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone is tackling holiday hunger this half term through their family Lunch Club. Fully booked within 48 hours of its launch the new initiative is supporting families over the October half-term holidays by hosting a FREE Lunch and a range of activities every day of the week.

Families across BwD have come along and enjoyed nutritious meals including shepherd’s pie and homemade soups whilst getting involved in various activities hosted by the Youth Zones youth workers and volunteers.

They bid to support the community through the cost of living crisis. The initiative is designed to provide food, warmth, and positive family activity throughout the cost of living crisis.

Hannah Allen, Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone CEO Said

Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone supports over 1200 young people weekly. We are concerned about how our members, their families and the wider community will cope. We have started to see signs that families are struggling, and young people are relying on our services more and more. In addition to the lunch club we have made all of our services free and all young people are receiving a free meal when they attend.

Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone, with the support of over 100 local businesses, is the heart of the community, and we will continue to work tirelessly to support the young people in the town.

Fahima Iqbal, Youth Work Manager said

During these times its important that as a community we rally together to support each other. This week we have seen 150 families each day come in to the centre and access a warm nutritious meal that they might not have got otherwise. It has been heart warming to see the smiles on the childrens faces as they have taken part in different activities each day. Over the coming months we are likely to see more and more people who need our support and we will ensure we are there when they need it.

Over the coming months, Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone will support the community by providing an adapted support package, including free entry to a warm building, free nutritious meals, family well-being sessions, free winter coats, and support over the Christmas period.
