Volunteer board member, Steve Turnock, is undertaking a uniquely enduring challenge on behalf of Blackburn Youth Zone…The Two Mile Challenge!
The Two Mile Challenge will see Steve climbing a vertical mile, reaching the summit of Mont Blanc, before taking part in the British Gas Great North Swim, swimming a mile in Lake Windermere.
Steve will be completing the challenge between the 12th and 23th June, sleeping in a mountain hut at an altitude of 3, 2000m, before making the one mile high summit trek, alongside his two sons. On returning to the UK, Steve will complete the one mile swim of Lake Windermere with a friend.
How did it come about…?
“I’m not sure where the idea came from, but there’s a three part answer as to why…
Firstly, ever since I skied the Vallée Blanche in Chamonix in 2007 with my sons Ben and Sam, we looked up at Mont Blanc, and I knew I wanted to stand on top of it!
Secondly, a call out of the blue from a friend asking “how do you feel about swimming a mile in Lake Windermere?” sealed the second leg of the challenge.
Finally, I guess it’s the becoming 50 thing; A milestone that I reached in May this year. And of course, to help raise funds for The Youth Zone.”
Both challenges have been paid for and so all of the funds raised will go directly to The Youth Zone, for example, towards projects helping young people get into work or to start their own business: “employability and enterprise”
Many thanks for your interest, and hopefully, your support in the challenge.
