Blackburn Youth Zone is hitting the road with a one-of-a-kind Arts Roadshow – showcasing Blackburn Youth Zone’s inspired arts programme. YZ Out There will be touring fivehotspots, spread out across the Blackburn Youth Zone catchment area.
YZ Out There
Open and free to all young people aged 8 – 21 – a series of taster workshops will give visitors an idea of the sort of thing they can expect from the Youth Zone. The theme is transferring energy, and how Blackburn’s young people power the town. Blackburn Youth Zone Arts Co-Ordinator, Ali Gadema, wants as many young people in the area to get involved. “I want young people to find out about what we are, have a go at doing something new, get involved in our opening and get involved in the programme.” All artists appearing at YZ Out There will be running more extensive workshops at the Youth Zone – so young people can follow up anything they joined in with.
With a dedicated Blackburn Youth Zone bus-with-a-twist – Blackburn Youth Zone will be inviting young people to get involved with some exciting and unusual artistic endeavours. Wrapping the entire inside of the bus in cardboard (rather like an inverted Christmas present) – young people can get creative drawing and sketching all over it. With internationally recognised graffiti artists, Neequaye Dsane, Sumit Sarkar on-hand to lend their artistic expertise – young people can discover the variety of graffiti styles out there.
For craftier types – a mask-making workshop will be run by artist Joel Rock – who has previously worked with Ian Brown, The Flaming Lips and Elbow – crafting human-sized, fantastical masks. Musically minded young people can try their hand a music production, with DJ and music producer Chimpo (who will also be doing a turn on the decks). Film-making duo Albino Mosquito will be running film making workshops, helping young people tap in to their film-making prowess.
YZ Out There will be getting on the road between the 19th and the 23rd December, please see details of the various locations below. We will be in each location between 10am and 3pm.
