At Blackburn Youth Zone, one of our missions is to start where young people are, and to go where young people take us. In the run up to our ‘soft openings’ – a series of openings in which young people from various youth groups and schools are given the chance to trial The Youth Zone – our Youth Work team have been running consultations with young people.
“Starting where young people are, going where young people take us…”
Focussing on our Junior Club – Blackburn Youth Zone Youth Work managers have visited fourteen schools in the local area and consulted over a thousand young people. As part of something of a fact finding mission – Blackburn Youth Zone asked young people to put together a ‘wish list’ of the sort of activities they would like to see on the programme and asked for their thoughts on the designing of the youth work programme. Junior Youth Work Manager Dave Palmer described visiting the schools as ‘fantastic’, adding ‘meeting with so many young people and listening to all their ideas – it’s going to be a lot of fun putting the junior programme together and even more fun being a part of it!’ Blackburn Youth Zone Sport Coordinator is especially excited about some of the ideas put forth for the sports programme, describing the young people’s thoughts as ‘inspirational ideas for potential projects’.
We will be posting the young people’s thoughts and ideas for the Blackburn Youth Zone programme on the site, so watch this space!
If you have any ideas for potential activities, please do let us know, either by commenting at the bottom of this article, or by emailing Junior Youth Work Manager Dave, at email@example.com
