Strongman

Strongman competitor and regular entrant to the World’s Strongest Man competition, Mark Felix visited Blackburn Youth Zone recently to hand out trophies to competitors in the Youth Zone’s own strongman competition.

Felix, who is based is Rishton, also watched the strongman competition which saw senior members challenge themselves with tasks including a tractor tyre flip, a oil drum press and a car pull with Mark Felix sat inside!

The overall winner of the Blackburn Youth Zone strongman 2013 competition was 21 year-old Peter Matapo with runner up being Sheikh Iqbal, 20, and third place going to Haroon Sabir, 16. A special achievement trophy was presented to Huzaifah Khan, 18, for the progress he made during the competition and in training leading up to the event.

On being crowned winner, Peter from Shadsworth, said: “Wow! It’s an amazing feeling – feels like the world to me! I feel so proud of my achievement, its shows that it doesn’t matter where you come from, its about how hard you work towards a goal. I’d also like to say a big thank you to Ishy, Cheick and Terry who organised the event.”

Ishy Issat, Blackburn Youth Zone Sports Coordinator, said: “The purpose of the event was to reward young people who have been attending the muscle man club in the Zone’s gym. They have been working incredibly hard with our gym instructors and showed the dedication required to succeed.

“Having Mark Felix come to the Zone to present the trophies was an amazing privilege for the competitors of our strongman competition. It also showed them what can be achieved through hard work and focus.

“I’d like to say a massive thank you to all our staff and volunteers who helped plan and deliver a fantastic event, especially members Danielle, Nathan, Liam and Aeman who played an integral role in helping to organise the day.”

The Blackburn Youth Zone muscle man club for 16-21 year-olds takes place on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 7-10pm in the Zone’s gym.
